HYDROGEN
Hydrogen is the promising fuel of the future in the view of the depleting fossil fuels. Hydrogen is biologically produced as an end product from the carbohydrates fermentations by Bacteria. Phototrophic micro-organisms are capable of producing significant amounts of molecular Hydrogen. Various photosynthetic Bacteria are known to produce Hydrogen using Solar Energy. The photosynthetic bacteria include both purple and Green Sulphur Bacteria. Some Cyanobacteria are also capable of producing Hydrogen.
Photosynthetic micro-organisms which can simultaneously produce Molecular Hydrogen and remove excess CO2 from the atmosphere may reverse the phenomenon of Global Warming. Also combustion of Hydrogen does not produce any other toxic gases that alter the atmosphere and hence it is a clean and safe fuel. Photoheterotrophic bacteria such as Rhodospirillum or Rhodopseudomonas are capable of utilizing waste materials for the production of Hydrogen.
