Bacillus anthracis

B. anthracis is a gram-positive, spore-forming bacillus that can be found in soil. It causes anthrax, which is primarily a disease of herbivores. A vaccine for anthrax in cattle was developed in the 1930s and is widely used today. Anthrax can be transmitted to humans through contact with animals or animal products. There are three forms of human anthrax: cutaneous, intestinal and pulmonary. B. anthracis has gained attention recently due to its potential for use as a biological weapon.
